Ottoman Architecture of Sarajevo

Osmanska arhitektura Sarajeva / Saraybosna’da Osmanli Mimarisi

by Kenan Šurković & Elvira Bojadžić

About the Book

The photo monography ‘Ottoman Architecture of Sarajevo’ represents the years-long desire of the authors to provide an account of the aesthetic and historical value of the architecture dominating the city for several centuries for both the general public and the experts. That such a publication was extremely necessary is corroborated by the fact that so far no comprehensive depictions of the Ottoman architecture in Sarajevo have been attempted, with the focus resting exclusively on partial analysis. This especially extends to generally limited photographic material. The agenda was to fill that vacuum, and to evoke the old Sarajevo, which, while increasingly transparent on the city’s tourist map, is still largely unknown, and thus the excellent photographs in this book will be eye-opening to many, including those native-born, and reveal those less famous and obscure corners of the architecture.

The majority of Ottoman architecture of the city is depicted in the photo monography. Finally, all of the domed mosques and public monuments, such as madrassah, bezistan, hamam, han, etc are encompassed by a single book. Naturally, likewise included are the four preserved bridges, segments of fortifications, remnants of devastated buildings, the most precious examples of residential architecture, etc.

To the authors, of utmost importance was to provide an account of the most significant neighbourhood mosques, smaller sacral monuments which serve as Sarajevo’s trademark. Their interiors still emit the spirit of the past, and the architectural forms illustrate the artistic preferences of older generations. All things considered, what lies ahead of you is a book that to a great degree illuminates the topic of Ottoman architecture of Sarajevo, and in this manner contributes to the general perception of the development of art in Bosnia and Herzegovina through centuries.

The book before you strikes as a time capsule of sorts leading us on a voyage through past centuries when Sarajevo was a major regional centre. The work is divided into five chapters, depicting dome mosques, followed by hip roof mosques, public buildings, bridges and residential architecture and to be precise, a description is provided for 32 mosques, 12 public and 5 residential buildings, 4 bridges, thus, altogether – 53 architectural monuments.
